Check out the video on how to use a roundabout:

Roundabouts

Today’s drivers face different challenges than in the past. Changes in driving patterns, increased distractions, and advances in technology have all impacted driving conditions. In response to these changes, improvements to road design have been developed, including the modern roundabout.

Intersections are among the most deadly of road dangers. This is mainly due to the speed of the vehicles when they fail to heed traffic controls, whether that control be a stop sign, four-way stop, or traffic signal. Roundabouts minimize this danger as they are designed to “calm” traffic by lowering the speed of the vehicles as they enter the roundabout. Research has found a 90% decrease in fatalities by construction of a roundabout over the use of a signalized intersection, with a 75% decrease in injury crashes and a 37% reduction in total crashes.

Authorities at the state and federal level have recognized the value of roundabouts in increasing safety, reducing air pollution and fuel use, and promoting traffic flow. To encourage the implementation of roundabouts, the federal government provides grants to local agencies to help fund their construction. This assistance allows road commissions to stretch limited transportation dollars while improving traffic safety for the residents and motorists.

The St. Clair County Road Commission pursues every opportunity to improve the safety and efficiency of the county’s road and bridge system. Modern roundabouts represent one more tool used to achieve that important goal.
